The space

A 400 sq ft combined living-dining room in a 3BHK flat in Mansarovar Extension. The flat had been habitable for two years — the family had been using plastic chairs and a temporary dining table. The room had:

  • Bare plastered walls (unpainted)
  • Unfinished cement flooring
  • No ceiling — bare concrete slab exposed
  • A single overhead bulb
  • No storage

The family's brief was practical: make the space livable without making it look unfinished. Budget: Rs. 4.2 lakh.

The plan

We visited the space on a Thursday, took measurements and photographs, and had a design plan and quote ready by Saturday. The family approved on Sunday. We started on the following Monday.

Sequence we planned:

Day 1–3: Flooring. We chose 800x800mm vitrified tiles in a warm sand-stone finish. No curing wait since vitrified adhesive sets in 24 hours.

Day 3–6: False ceiling framework. MS channel grid, gypsum board, and tape. Cove light channel along all four walls. Two down-lighter points in the living zone, one over the dining area.

Day 6–8: Painting. Warm cream on three walls, a warm dark clay tone on the TV feature wall. Ceiling in same cream as walls — keeping it simple.

Day 8–12: TV unit. Floor-to-ceiling MDF unit in espresso dark laminate with cane insert panels in the upper section. No handles — push-to-open mechanisms on lower cabinets.

Day 12–14: Electrical finish — lights, fans, switches. LED strip in cove. Two wall-mounted lights flanking the TV unit.

What changed

The flooring alone transformed how the room felt — the same walls and ceiling look completely different on a finished floor versus bare cement. The false ceiling dropped the perceived height from 11 feet to 9 feet, which felt more human-scale. The cove lighting gives the room warmth at evening that overhead lighting alone cannot.

The TV unit gave every surface item a home — the wire clutter that had been the dominant visual element of the room disappeared.

Day 14: Family walked into a complete, furnished room. All snags (one ceiling junction with slight gap, one switch plate not fully flush) fixed by day 15.

What it cost

ItemCost
Flooring (vitrified, 400 sq ft)Rs. 78,000
False ceiling (gypsum + frame)Rs. 62,000
Painting (materials + labour)Rs. 28,000
TV unit (floor to ceiling MDF)Rs. 95,000
Electrical (lights, fans, wiring)Rs. 54,000
Accessories and decorRs. 22,000
TotalRs. 3,39,000

The project came in under the Rs. 4.2 lakh budget. The remaining Rs. 81,000 the family used for dining furniture (sourced separately from a furniture retailer).

The actual point of this project

This transformation was not expensive and it was not complicated. It required planning the sequence correctly, specifying materials that worked for the room, and executing without any day lost to waiting for decisions that should have been made upfront.

That is not exceptional — it is just how interior work should be done.
